Met Medusa Pink Marble

Met Medusa Pink Marble

This head-turning handbag references Antonio Canova’s (Italian, 1757–1822) Perseus with the Head of Medusa (1804–6), a monumental sculpture in The Met collection. It celebrates the Greek hero Perseus’s victory over Medusa, the monstrous mythological Gorgon feared for her hair made of snakes and her deathly gaze that turned anyone she looked at to stone. Canova masterfully commemorates Perseus’s triumph over Medusa, whose likeness has long served as an image of evil to repel evil. The artist was universally acknowledged as the preeminent sculptor of his era, and his imposing masterwork in the Museum’s holdings closely reflects his admiration for the art of antiquity. This unique bag celebrates Canova’s creation with the addition of Sprayground’s signature shark mouth.
